Is there a right and wrong side to cotton batting? I know there is a srim on one side does this go by the front or back of a quilt sandwich.?

The scrim, if there is one, goes down on the backing. For cotton, the side with flecks is up--rough side down. Not all battings have a scrim side.

I've never paid much attention to which side is up/down. I'm sure I must have done it both ways. I haven't noticed a difference between my quilts. What difference would there be? Is it softer on one side vs the other? If so, wouldn't you want the softer side down where it touches your body? I generally use Warm & Natural.

Machine quilting on a frame is where it will really make a difference. If you load it scrim side up it will shred your thread & dull the needle quicker. I've also had a "dirty" batt where I'd have patches of bird seed fly up out of the quilt and shred my thread. I normally use Hobbs 80/20. I've got a Simplicity poly (cheap from Joann.com) to try and something else I forgot the name of.
