How do I get the smoky smell out of 6" squares? I'm afraid if I wash them, they'll fray and then not be 6" anymore.

You can try using Febreeze and laying them outside, perhaps in a mesh bag so they don't blow away.

Could you make whatever you were gonna make and then wash it when you are done?? Or use Fabreeze.

I would febreeze them and was the whole quilt when finished :D:D:D

I sometimes get things that smell of smoke and I use the extra strength Febreeze on them. Sometimes it take a couple of times of spraying and drying. Sometimes I have to do it from both sides. I usually just lay them on an old towel on the carpet.

Put them in a plastic bag with a bar of either Safeguard or Dial deodorant soap. It takes the smell totally away, doesn't get the fabric wet and doesn't leave a smell of its own.

I'd have to use some type of soap and water even if it meant hand SOAKING and squeezing out of water. Then I'd lay them out to dry, iron and then use.

I couldn't stand smelling the smoke.

This had a light smoke smell, by the time I got done making one coaster I couldn't smell it as much. I just put it in the washing machine with some towels. I'll keep you updated!! :)

Soak in Simple Green then rinse well. You can use febreeze afterwards if you like its smell. There is nothing as strong as old fish smells in clothing and fish cleaning gloves. The guides up here in Alaska use Simple Green to launder them in. It works better than anything at removing bad odors.
