I have been thinking about this since the directions were posted on the Board. Yesterday I tried it and like it a lot. I measured 2 1/2 inches from edge and put pins in. I then cut out the corners. I folded the end up to meet the pins and sewed very close to the edge of the hem. I cut slits (to the stitch line) 3/8 inch apart. Starting at one end, I pulled the first flap over the second, the second over the third - went around the corners the same way and then put the last flap over the very first and tacked it down. My learning experience:
1. Turn to right side to make braid
2. Be sure to use matching thread in machine
3. Do not make flaps narrower than 3/8 inch
4. Making flaps 1/4 inch made a larger and heavier braid. I like the small one.
5. Keep flaps from twisting.
6. You can use a large crochet hook. I just used my fingers.
7. I like it very much. It is a great way to end a single layer fleece blanket.

If you cut out the corners how did you go around the corner with the braid? I like the idea.Think I understand the rest of the directions.

It's the same method I used finishing off woven potholders. I never thought about using it for fleece blankets. Nice idea.

You have to cut them out or you have too much bulk. Same as when you do the tied fleece blankets.

It was easier than I expected. Just take the last loop from the end of the side you are working on and put the 1st loop of the next side into it and continue as before. You go around the corner very easily and smoothly. It works and I love it. If you try a small piece as I did, you will see how it goes. Good luck!

Our Project Linus chapter does the braided edge for most of our blankets. It gives such a nice finish to the fleece and it eliminates fringe which some of the hospitals don't like. Great way to do the small remnant pieces of fleece to use for the NICU. Most NICU's use between 18"square to 24" square fleece, flannel blankets for their babies.

I would like to add that many of the agencies that Project LInus serves, the children will have a small doll or stuffed animal that means the world to them. Taking small remnants of fleece and flannel and making small,doll-sized blankets for those special items just makes a child's day. That child will just glow when he is given the opportunity to select a blanket for their favorite companion.

Thanks jdiane! Years ago I made flannel blankets with a bear in the middle for the Linus Project. I need to do the fleece now and I love the doll blanket idea. Maybe a blanket for her and a doll blanket to match. Great inspiration. Y
