Private message came up on a search engine

Boy was I shocked this morning. I was doing a search and a Quilting Board private message showed up and anybody could read it.

How do I stop this?

I've never heard of this before. You should contact PatriceJ and see what she says. She is the board moderator.

This happened on one of the private boards I use to be a member of. It turned out the administrator of the board changed the private setting open so she could read the pms of all the members and the search grabbed one while she had it open. I'm not saying this is what happened here but remember nothing is private online, not even emails.

I have seen threads come up on Google. What search engine were you on. QB or Google?? I would contact PatriceJ immediately. Wonder if this has anything to do with sites that were hacked by the Russians.

This is disturbing! I hope this was a single isolated incident.

A person could better off to just use ones own email whenever possible.

This has me concerned. I hope we learn more about why this happened.

I, too, am concerned about the chance of PMs being read by admin or anyone else, here or otherwise. The very reason they are called "Private Messages" is because they should be PRIVATE. If, by some wild chance, there is a glitch - I won't call it anything else - in our own admin settings, I feel we should be informed. That applies to any board we may be registered on.

Praying this was a unique incident,
Jan in VA

would you please tell us which search engine you were using and which search words you were using? thanks

I would think the smart thing to do would be for KarenR to send the link of where she was directed to PatriceJ. Please, let's not panic until facts are known.

i cannot begin an investigation without that link.
i will have to forward the resulting information to our tech support - marked URGENT, of course.

private messages are private.
i don't have access; don't think they could give me access if i asked for it; and i certainly don't want all the extra work that would come with having it. the security and privacy implications, alone, make me dizzy just thinking about them.
the techs have better things to do with their time than to fish around in our PMs.

so ... bottom line ... if they have become open to public view it's a glitch they will fix as soon as they know about it.

i am closing this thread to prevent a stream of posts that are all panic and no facts.
as soon as i have more information i will come back and let you know what i found out.
