One Q--Why so small? You might find it a little easier to work slightly larger. (At least I would)

I would take that photo, grab some beiges with a variety of interesting very small prints or textures, iron some heat'n'bond to them and start cutting. (Ok lots of folks like making pattern pieces out of clear Home Depot plastic or some other media first and layering them on your background fabric to see how the shapes create your kitty) The iron on makes great pictures easy. Just go a few pattern pieces at a time and you can build that great looking pussy cat.

Or I have also had some good success with photo transfer. It partly depends on the end use, small space on the bathroom wall? Series of Q blocks to be used for a larger project? A little more dat might net some more usable advice.

In any case good luck and post your finished product here so we can have a look at your results.

6.5" because its going to be a block for a charity quilt. There is a cat rescue that has a live webcam and I love to watch the kitties. One of the members came up with the idea of making a friendship quilt and auctioning it to raise funds for the center. This is the block size that the quilter wants us to use. The cat pictured is one of my favorites and I would like to make a block from his picture. I have given thought to doing a more traditional cat quilt block and then maybe doing a larger one from this cat as a wall hanging for another fundraiser that they have later on in the year but really would love to have him on the first quilt!!

I would play about with printing on paper until you have the exact size you want on you photocopier. Then print onto fabric. P.s. Don't forget seam allowance.

OK with that data then I think the photo to fabric route is the way to go. It will be adorable and cuddly but that photo will definitely get the point across! Good for you to be involved in the project. And learning the photo technique is great for your quilting future. First check to see if you use ink or actual pigment inks in your printer. Pigments mean no need for specially treated fabric as the chemistry is different.

If you have the cheap printers they almost give away and then charge a fortune for the ink thereafter you need the prepared sheets. But you can call your printer company help# and have a quick chat to them. If you like going photo to fabric there is the Bubble Jet liquid system which will prepare a huge amount of fabric for a lot less that the prepackaged sheets. There are forum discussions with lots of info on this topic the board here.

Be sure and show us what you come up with. If you go photo to fabric it sure is easy to print a nice 8x10 for that wall hanging you mentioned! Your 6.5 can also be surround by a few smaller copies of the same photo too so you could have little dancing kitties somewhere.....................I do get carried away sometimes................

Suzie - you're getting carried away! You should see the cat blocks and quilts that I've pinned to pinterest. It's a shame that each person only is to submit 2 blocks!! So many to choose from! But I really, really want to do something with the cat that I posted here. He and his twin brother are permanent residents of this facility and all the cam viewers love them so much.

Now I'm thinking to do my 2 quilt blocks in a more traditional style and use this guy's picture for a wall hanging. That way I can really make him stand out! Of course, I will probably change my mind on that tomorrow and then again the next day and . . . .

But I do think that kitty photo would come out very nicely as an 8x10 photo transfer. Maybe one of his brother too. They might be very nice $$ makers at a fund raising event they have for the cam watchers. (my original thought). Plus a few commissions from those who miss out on the originals. All that sort of thing does happen pretty regularly with loved animals.

Meantime there are some great appilque block patterns around for the group piece.

Went to the Leger show yesterday at the Philly museum. Rocky has stopped running up the steps! It was great to see some of the mid-century modern guys, and those from before, like Leger. There was a painting by Kropik i particularly like and it has inspired me to do an art quilt in a similar style. Will work out the paint or dye issue. First thought is painting with dye on PDF cotton. Second is color blocking and appliqué. Third is patchwork. Yup. Probably will try all three. I have always loved modern art and as I am a mid-century modern piece of work myself, it is a time i enjoy! Told dh i want an atomic ranch and he was pretty baffled . I would love stained cement counters and floors. Floor to ceiling windows, skylights, color blocked walls, need i go on? I would even make "1 more Rya rug. I think i remember how. Granted that was in the '60's, but since it's not essential, i still remember it. Lol. Only important stuff is forgotten! Meanwhile, or beforehand,i have a ton of stuff to make before i head to dallas on Sunday! I have done nothing all week due to a persistent headache, but now i have little choice. Can't arrive without hostess gifts, and two birthdays while I'm there. I have made one doll outfit so i need one more and a girl dress to go with. Sew, sew, sew!
love the cat pic! And Suzie, love the musical! I can hear it! Lively, and makes me want to dance! A fun idea for quilting would be the lyrics from a meaningful song. But then, i love to write with the sewing machine, lol !

Just had an idea for november's theme, and it is very self-serving i admit. Rather than do the thankfulness theme that we Americans are so fond do, how about, choose an artist or style you like and produce a piece that is inspired by it/them. Like, idk, Leger, Picasso, or Kropik?!

Do you think Frank Stella is too obvious? Or one of those Jasper Johns white-on-white prints? Or maybe something lending itself to embroidery and thread painting or random dragged-in bits of wool, like Pollock?LOL
