I would use an open weave gauze/cheesecloth and dye it with black/gray and then go from there

Wow! Have you drawn this with ink or thread?
first rule of art quilts- there are no rules!
sleep on it, then come back and try something, anything. If you don't like it start eliminating, shifting, and adding. Artists may do a dozen or more paintings or drawings until they get to the right combination. Try running off copies on a copier and add color, stitches, jewels, other embellishments. It's NIKE art, JUST do it! Have fun! Love what you have so far!

Thanks for the suggestions, and the encouragement. It is actually a photo that I've enlarged and drawn out.

As you said Nancia, I just need to jump in and start. I also really like the gauze cheesecloth idea. I think that texture will be much better than the tulle I was thinking of.

I am off to a quilt retreat in a couple weeks and I think I will take it along to that and hopefully have something to show off soon.

I am going to start a new quilt. I've attached a photo of what I want to accomplish.

Currently I have the black portion and the grey portion drawn out and partially cut out. I planned to iron it onto a white background. My idea was to use one or two layers of tulle for some of the sections where I wanted shadow. In my head, I would like to use grey and black thread to quilt in the different sections.

As I get closer to actual assembly of the applique onto fabric, I am second guessing myself.

I know there are many art quilters who subscribe to this thread, and I wondered if anyone had any suggestions on how I should proceed. This is actually only my second attempt at art quilts, so any and all suggestions are more than welcome.
No suggestions from here but this is absolutely gorgeous!!

With others already going dibs on their favorites.................. Awesome!

Thanks for all of those who chimed in on this one. Let's do it!!!!!!
So any aspiring Georgia O'Keefe quilts happening out there?! I did consider it myself but went in another direction that is pretty darned cubist instead. What are the rest of you up to? Love to see some goodies IP

I'm planning a piece based on Josef Albers "Interaction of Color". Most of what we learn as color theory came from the Bauhaus. This was an art school in Germany, forced out by the Nazis. (Art teacher here.) Albers ' wife was a weaver and also worked in color theory. There is a new line of "shot cottons" , by Pepper Kory (sp?). Denser than the ones by
Kaffe Fasett. Might be just the thing.

The artist i keep referring to erroneously is Kupka. I have been in texas for nearly two weeks and have done nothing quilty. I was going to make a table topper for my daughter but her s.o. Doesn't like anything on tables or counters. Glad i hadn't made it yet! We have had sooooo much drama!! Actually can't wait to get home. Will miss my sweet lulu and lala, but I have a much gentler life . I love tx, but my dd is off the track! More tales later! Lol, grrrrrr.

Keep those artists names coming. I've searched the names and looked at their work. Fantastic, but I wonder how I would ever do that in fabric. I know, I just need to give it a try. And, I will as soon as I finish my latest art project. My projects usually take a long time to complete -- I like to enjoy the process, which means they are long projects.

I'm off to a quilt retreat this weekend, and will be doing some traditional piecing. They are quilts I wanted to make, and I usually need solitude to work on art quilts.

I'm looking for my next project so do keep those artist names coming.
