Jenniky - you are really steaming ahead with the fire station, and such a lovely fire engine. What a cheerful project! Your little grandson will think it is for him - is it? And you are so organised... I think it's time I tidied up my sewing room, it's getting pretty chaotic.

A bit more work done on the thistle today...

QuiltE - I knew one of you Canadian gals would get "chuffed to bits."

Muv ... We had a British Bloke work on the farm, and live with us for a year, several years back. And too, his buddies on other farms seemed to make our place their Canadian home, being that there were no kids to tolerate at our place! After picking him up at the airport, our language education started .... he was looking for some Squash before bed? odd I thought, then with some explanation, I "got it"!

JenniKy ... I like W4Me's suggestion ... machine SITD would work well for this pattern. And if you wanted something else, cross hatching on the squares ... or perhaps one straight stitched (machine) star over the group of squares. I'm like you, just learning FMQing, so hesitate doing it, so as not to destroy my piecing work! If you've done smaller machine projects, I think you'd be ready to do it on this one. Your 4th of July Firehall is going to be perfectly fun ... any significance in the family to the fire theme (ie is your DH a fireman?)

SewExS ... good to see you jumping right in with this broody lot!
BTW *nudge* *nudge* for the fabric show and tell!

W4Me .... I'm bad and labels often don't get done. For sure, any quilts, tabletoppers, etc. that I have parted with have not left me til they were labelled.

I have done them by hand with Sharpie markers. Also, have met a lady thru QB who lives near me that has done a few machine embroidered ones. And if I'd ever get around to buying a colour printer, then I'd probably go that route. Though with the lovely machine embroidery work, it's hard to persuade myself to not give her the business .... and save myself the agony! A summer project for me, should be to get caught up in the label department!

Whew... just got home from running errands all morning and an appt. this afternoon. Did start out by picking up a 1900 vintage Singer sewing head with a cute little shuttle bobbin though. Now, as soon as I catch my wind I am going to 'practice' for the jelly roll race I am in tomorrow morning with my Singer 301. I have never done this before, sew, how could I turn down the invitation.

on the way home, I did beginning thinking of what type of design I would want to create for this challenge. Sew, your encouragement is working. Thanks.

Love what's going on here. Things seem to be just zipping along.

Canada D'Eh is done. Not happy about the written iron-on portion of the label as it appears, even scorched, it still didn't adhere well. But, I didn't want to redo the maple leaf on the label as it was just too perfect so the label is on anyway.
Two of my machine's 60 stitches. I used a different one for each side border and just meandered. I also used peppermint candy fabric for my binding:

The back:

And the label:

See what I mean about how perfect the maple leaf iron-on is?

I bought a moose iron-on for next year. It will go perfectly with the Oh Canada fabric which arrived today and is fabulous but will have to wait. Next project is a dragon fabric multi-pocketed apron for a craft fair in a couple of weeks.

Keep up the good work everyone.

Here is a backside peek at my Firetruck... Hip and Back are giving me a bad time today and Im trying not to take any pain meds...just stretching and warm moist heat on my back. So I don't know how much Im going to get done unless I break done and take pain meds.

Muv - Im using the "Non Patented" Method to make the fire engine. This first attempt on the Fire Engine is going well, However I can see where I need to adjust the width of my pattern to compensate for the Machine Satin Stitch when working with smaller pieces.

QuiltE - I don't get it.. What is Looking for Squash before bed?? Fate seems to want me to try the Machine Quilting on the Patriotic Scrappy. The LQS Lady I was going to send the quilt to said her machine is going to have to have repairs. So Its still all stretched out on the frame upstairs.

Sew with all you fine ladies encouragement Im going to give it a try... When grandson takes his nap this afternoon Im going to spend some time figuring out exactly what Im going to do. Then I will run a baste or tie it together to hold it in place for the machine.

Works4Me - Canada D'Eh is so beautiful. Im sure you are "Chuffed to Bits". LOL alrighty ladies I had to try using the saying at least once.

Grandson is involved in his lil TV program and yawning so that is a good sign Im going to have a lil free time to concentrate soon. Have a wonderful day all.

Jenniky-love your "fire house and fire engine!" We have lots of "fire" things around our house. My husband retired almost 2 yrs ago from a 35 1/2 yr career in the fire service!! Did you use "tear away" to stabilize when you stitched it all--helps with less shrinkage!

Sorry your back is bothering you--what is wrong, do you know? I husband hurt his back a year ago--turns out he has 3 bulging discs. He went to a spine specialist for about 6 months--he used ice only not heat. Even though heat feels good, the spine specialist and physical therapist said ice is better. The numbing effect of ice packs helped reduce the pain, too!

Thank him for me for his service to mankind; our support services are so vital to helping rescue and keeping people from danger and I know saving lives and property can sometimes be a very difficult and dangerous job.

I chose to start with the Fire Department. Because When I asked myself what is the first thing I think of when I think of the Fourth of July. It was Fire Safety and I wanted my 3-P Quilt to be a safe town. So that is where I got the idea. Didnt want to create any Fireworks without the Fire Department on Watch

As for my back and hip. My car was totaled by an elderly lady driver who was chatting with her friends instead of paying attention to the road she ran a red light at approx 60 mph <my estimate> and hit my car. The muscles were torn away from the bones in my hip and created lots of problems with the nerves in my lower back. My muscles tighten/ stiffen up badly sometimes and the Moist Heat helps. Ice usually helps numb but then I still have the problem of not being able to move. So physical therapist recommends Moist Heat for me and lots of stretching. Im hoping once the court case is settled I will have enough money to go to a specialist. At this time Im told there is nothing operable they can do for me. So its all pain management. Quilting sometimes helps me keep my mind off the pain. So I try to focus on it when I can. But there are the bad days. Oh well, so go's life.

Jenniky - so sorry to hear about your bad back. It sounds like one of those problems where you just have to hope it will heal naturally and bear it as best you can in the meantime. Filling your life with quilting works when you feel well enough
, and your fire station is taking shape really quickly! I'm dragging my feet a bit with the thistle.

Anyway, give your little grandson a biscuit and a cup of squash and a hug from me. I think that will translate as a cookie and a cup of fruit crush - QuiltE understands...
