ART Quilt Challenges Monthly

Please don't be frightened by the title. This is a scheme to get us all to experiment with new ideas and techniques. Since there seems to be some interest in expanding horizons into 'artistic' type quilts a few of us thought it would be good to have monthly themes for using the other side of your brain. (You know the one you have a suspicion might be atrophying?)

Remember that these are experiments which means a lot of what you will try won't work but some will be very unexpectedly satisfying. :) Techniques are whatever....I personally use up a lot of Wonder Under and some of the ugliest fabrics imaginable just to see what happens. Size is whatever seems to be required by your idea but of course small is more manageable. (Also fits well on the bathroom wall or as a gift :)

Come and join us for feedback and ideas on how to accomplish things you might otherwise not tackle!

May's theme is 'The unknown world' -- splat some weird shaped blobs on a block and you have cells. What about coral shapes from deep undersea? Then embellish....... You get the idea.........

nancia 05-25-2012 02:16 PM

i can meet you here for June. i'm a little busy still for may. any theme?

dotcomdtcm 05-25-2012 02:20 PM

May is almost over, but I'll join. Do we make our own & post photos?

oksewglad 05-25-2012 03:19 PM

I've got an idea--let's see if I can take it from there!
Hi Dotty. Your creativeness should inspire us all.

SewExtremeSeams 05-25-2012 07:03 PM

Glad to see you moved the 'art' quilting here in the challenges. Should be easier to find.

How can it already be May 25th and Memorial Day Weekend? Where did this month go? :D

nancia 05-25-2012 07:42 PM

since my first question was answered right above where i posted, let me restate my question. are we starting may now and going into june with it? or is may a wash and we'll start in june? official 'nice to have it done by date'?

toi123 05-26-2012 11:38 AM

I just need to know if I do a crafty/creative project with my atrophied hemi-brain, will I be able to find this particular place, again, to post it? (IOW, how do I get back here after I leave?)

June is flying by without a challenge theme, so I’d like to propose one. :o Hope I'm not stepping on any toes....

June Theme: Independence Day

What does that phrase mean to you? Does it bring up thoughts of the Fourth of July? A birthday party for your country, whatever your country may be? Or maybe the day you got your driver’s license? Your first paycheck or the day you moved out of your parent’s house? Perhaps your eighteenth, or twenty-first, birthday? Could it be the day your divorce was final? Winning the lottery? Whatever springs to mind when you think of Independence Day, show us in a quilt.

Finished size and shape are your choice
Must be three layers connected by stitching; hand, machine or both
Must have finished edges; bound, zigzagged, piped, fused, any method to close the edge
May use alternative fibers (such as paper), but must follow the above guidelines
Should be new work made for this challenge

Use whatever techniques you want; new or old, conventional or off-the-wall. Try new ways to alter the texture of your fabric or the color. Maybe some surface design. Print with food or found objects, stamp with rubber stamps or erasers or wood blocks, embellish with beads or buttons or charms or paper clips, stitch with metallic threads or yarns or wire, the sky’s the limit. The greatest joy of art quilting is the simple fact that if you can dream it, you can do it.

If you get stuck on how to do something, what might work in a particular situation, which way to go…just ask. Sharing ideas and experiences is a big reason we’re all here. Stretch yourself; it’s called a challenge for that very reason. Most of all…have fun! :)

Post pictures along the way if you want, we'll gladly provide motivation and support. And be sure to post finished pictures and tell us the story behind your quilt and the techniques you used to create it.

Lots of possibilities here! The first thing that comes to mind is fireworks over NYC . Then I think about raising my 3 kids to be independent... how to do that in a quilt?...

azwendyg 06-07-2012 05:41 AM

Interesting challenge... don't know that I can find the time in June, but will be looking forward to July's theme.

Happy Linda 06-07-2012 06:55 AM

I don't have time right now but a great idea. Have fun.

nancia 06-07-2012 07:41 AM

dotty-- first thing that comes to mind with the kids is a pool of tears, lol. theirs and mine. such a battle sometimes!

dotcomdtcm 06-07-2012 07:44 AM

thought y'all might be interested- i posted a thread, "some fun mug rugs" in pictures. they were lots of fun and a 'side bet' to the round mug rug swap.

i posted this picture earlier in a dq swap, but i wanted you to see what i'm working on. i have used 2 new techniques, fabric painting and fabric dyeing ( i want new kitchen counters, heh heh heh)

dotcomdtcm 06-10-2012 08:13 AM

Did you join the swap?

dotcomdtcm 06-10-2012 08:20 AM

nancia 06-10-2012 08:24 AM

dotcomdtcm 06-10-2012 08:42 AM

We meet every Wed at someone's house, 10-2 and I have a guest room! Your son moved to NYC? Hmmm, I have a very lovely daughter...

oksewglad 06-10-2012 04:41 PM

:D:D ? to the bride and groom, "How did you two meet?" "Oh our mom's set up a blind date on the QB"

dotcomdtcm 06-10-2012 05:29 PM

My son says his greatest fear is that he meets a great girl and then she says... Did your Mom ever teach art?? no way

nancia 06-10-2012 06:24 PM

think what an artfully put together wedding we could do! hahahaha

SewExtremeSeams 06-11-2012 08:31 PM

:D :D Well, Dotty, I was going to comment how yummy your top quilt looks... mmmm, good! But, I see you and Nancia are planning a future wedding... I hope the happy couple appreciates all of your loving help:D:D:D...and they were forever happy wrapped in their Moms' quilts!

sewbeadit 06-11-2012 10:23 PM

Dotty, so you are going to marry off your son now?lol This sounds like a great thread, but I just now found it, so maybe someone should let others know about it maybe on the main thread? Of course, I haven't been on here a lot lately so I may have missed a note on there. If I have time I would love to do one for June.

Dotty, I really loved this quilt, great job. Lynn

dotcomdtcm 06-12-2012 04:08 AM

no wedding, the girl has met someone else, oh well

QuilterMomma 06-12-2012 08:04 AM

So if I read this thread right, I have a daughter that is 21 who needs a wealthy young man to sweep her off her feet. Is that to young? I know, in Washington, may be a long distance relationship.

Now is the theme for June the Independence Day theme suggested? Or was it something else? I have some fabric sitting in a UFO pile of mine that is red white and blue that I could use for the challenge if that is what was decided.

Do we have a thought for July? Since these are for ourselves, or gifts if we choose, then there should be no fear if someone likes it or not. Please elaborate so we have a direction.

dotcomdtcm 06-12-2012 09:10 AM

June has 2 suggestions, Independence & Your Favorite Color. I am enjoying these little gems. There are 2 big projects waiting in my brain but I have been too distracted by family life to dig into them. So we need 1-2 good ideas for July!

nancia 06-12-2012 07:28 PM

i will check with my dear son to see if 21 is in range. he is 31, so that may seem too old to your daughter. anyhow, why are you trying to marry her off so young? he is just a baby to me, too. lolol !
ok, i need to come up with another idea for this challenge then. but first, i have to finish the painted aaqi painted quilt. i plan to quilt it tonight. wish me luck!

Linny 06-13-2012 10:42 AM

So much going on in June.......be back for July and really looking forward to participate.

nancia 06-13-2012 01:47 PM

she is done! i will post a picture later, but right now i'm just relaxing and enjoying the fact that she is finished and i don't hate her. lol

QuilterMomma 06-15-2012 05:15 AM

Yeah, 31 is a little old for her. Not trying to marry her off so young, just have someone else be her close friend for about 3 years then they can get married. That way she finishes college, gets a job, lives on own for a little bit, then she gets married. By then I will be ready for grandkids. LOL
