QuiltE...your know how to rattle a person's chain don't you? I have a Texas Star in red, white, and blue just needing the setting blocks and borders that has been bumped several times...I'll give it a whirl but make no promises. Maybe I can at least get the top done and off my conscious. I've been eyeing the fabric for other projects because I'm sure I have more than I need but not how much more. Dangerous thinking if I want to finish it. My son lives in Texas so I started this for his birthday over a year ago so maybe this year in late July.

gardnergal970 - yes, please join us. It sounds perfect for our challenge. Even if you don't get a chance to completely finish you will be further along than you are now. Or, perhaps you can finish the quilt top and then join a UFO challenge at a later date as inspiration to completely finish. And we want pictures.
I drink tea as well, but herbal as I am not supposed to have caffeine. As to coffee, I've never understood how something that smells so good can taste so bad. IMO. Well, I have an appointment this morning so better go. Time to squeeze in a few more rows on the maple leaf, though.:) |

Dublb - Wonderful, a Texan tea drinker! Leaf tea is a great ritual, and an excuse for a nice teapot and tea cosy. Patriotic tea cosy? Thimblebug - The pictures don't really explain how I'm doing it. It's applique where cutting the material is the last thing you do. The daffodil outline is on the paper stencil, it is laid on top of the yellow, with the background material underneath. Then I sew along the lines, remove the paper, and only trim along the edges of the flower shape when I get there with the blanket stitch. This prevents fraying before I am ready to sew it. The applique is anchored in with the machine and hand stitching, and the blanket stitch covers the raw edge. There again, on the picture where I show work on the rose, the paper is on the back and I'm adding stitched detail... All will be revealed eventually, quilt and methods, but in the meantime I really need you ladies to cheer me on because it is going to be weeks and weeks yet... QuiltE - Glad you spotted the old fashioned look! I'm using a 1927 Singer 99K hand machine, so perhaps the look was slightly inevitable! This is the first thread on here where I have found so many Canadians - I'm really enjoying hearing from you all! Sorry Muv ... somehow I missed this post! Oh yes, Earl Grey is one of my favourites too, though I do really like Lady Grey when I can find her! Good suggestion Muv,to DublB ... how about a tea cozy DublB????? I know you don't want to show more of this WIP. Because we're intrigued about your different technique, could you show us something else that you have done using the same technique?? It might help us have a better idea of what you're doing and where you're heading. And OMG ... you're using a hand sewing machine as in crank with your hand and no electricity? Now there's a patriotic heritage spirit!!!! The machine combined with the technique are perfect ..... I "think" where you are heading is what I remember as some of the way the older linens that my Mom had were made. At least, that's what my brain is telling me! Glad you are enjoying the Crazy Canucks here ... how 'bout bringing some more of your Brits along to this tea party!!!!! :) |
I did a stem! It even curves! Yea for me! Thanks Muv for the great description on how to do it! I am working on a wallhanging for my daughter's bright orange bathroom. It is a big bright scrappy dresedn flower. Still have to sandwich it & quilt it.
I also made a snap bag/purse for my MIL for Mother's day this week. I pulled out the UFO I am going to do for this challange. It is still ugly & I am glad I figured out what I am going to do with it! I'll charge my camera battery & get a pic up & maybe some suggestions from all of you. |
Can someone show me what a tea cozy is?
I tried Earl Gray once & it tasted like black pepper ta me. (I use very little black pepper as I'm not overly fond of it.:)) I was at a hotel & it was what was in the room, so it probably wasn't the best of quality. I guess I'm not a very good 'Trekkie'. That's where I first heard of Earl Grey Tea. One of the reasons that I drink so much tea is for the theophlin that is in it. Theophlin has been prescribed for me for my asthma before & I figured out that the small amounts of it in tea can calm my asthma & my kid's asthma better than an inhailer at times. I'm rambling again. GG ya know how much I love all things Texan. I can't wait for your version. Muv that's a neat method of applique. I'm lookin' forward ta seein' it finished. |

DublB ... I'm not sure where your pepper in Earl Grey came from, as I can't remember any snap of pepper in any of the blends I have had before. Earl Grey is a black tea with oil of bergamot and if anything, you will find a slight citrus taste. I will say, that there are some brands I prefer more than others. A tea cosy is a "coat" for your tea pot, to keep the tea nice and warm and cozy! Some will totally cover and need to be removed when you pour while most have a place for the spout, so you can pour while it's still on. Some are knitted or crocheted, like a toque. Some are puffy quilted creations! Like most things in life, some will be utilitarian and some will be quite the work of art. I've never bothered with one .... Oh, those are darlin'! I might make something a little later after I'm caught up w/my PC blocks. I laid tile in both bathrooms yesterday & taday. No sewing. I have high hopes for next week!

Maple leaf is finished and washed. Couldn't sleep so made a cup of herbal tea and washed the leaf. Used some dish soap and vinegar in a glass bowl with warm water, after going at it with a white eraser which worked quite well. Then used a stainremover stick and pencil is gone. Probably 99% but I'm not going to push my luck. I need to check the size required. If the Aida is a bit small I will do narrow white and red borders. Maybe even if it isn't too small. [ATTACH=CONFIG]332932[/ATTACH] It's drying between the folds of a towel right now and I'll iron it a bit later, while it is still slightly damp. Then, on to cutting some of the actual quilt blocks. |
