International Patriotic Challenge
1 Attachment(s)
My fellow Canadian QuiltE and I would like to issue a patriotic challenge. Since Canada Day and Independence Day fall so close to one another we thought it would be fun to issue a challenge to everyone to complete a quilt or other craft item in a patriotic theme. I have a Maple leaf quilt to do and QuiltE has a Mountie so we are all set.
Of course, if you do not live in North America, we don’t want to leave you out. We’d love to see what you have for patriotic items on which to work and we can learn a little about your days of independence or incorporation or freedom. Try something new, mug rugs, table runner, pot holders. Me, I'm trying corner triangles. Mine will be a car quilt for any car shows we do, either in Canada or in the US, on July 1. Show us your country spirit. But do it before July 1, 2012. - That is Canada's 145th birthday. I know we are babies in the world. How old is your country? This is my the very beginnings of my project. I have adapted the pattern to include a cross stitched maple leaf as the centre square. Kathy |
Come one, Come all .... We'll have a ball!!!
As Works4Me mentioned ... we want to see and hear the patriotism from our Quilter Friends in ALL countries, worldwide. And as many "threads" tend to become, chatting is encouraged on this one! We can all learn more about each other's part of the world, our customs and our cultures. So please do tell, and show us your "threads", in the Before, During and After stages, as you work your way thru a new Patriotic Project! (typed in true Canadian Flag Red!) http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...oPHEyG_dskPWis P.S. I'll post a pic of the Mountie and all is parts soon! |
Count me in! I am in the process of designing a patriotic quilt for a client & this just gave me the incentive to get it done!
|
Sounds interesting. I have to put my thinking cap on.
|
Does it count if I use a quick and easy pattern? I found this one and can't wait to get going on it. I am using Moda's Prairie Paisley II collection. Will need more than a jelly roll, though, for all I want to do, so am waiting for more fabric to arrive. Can't say it will all be done by July, but ?????

And Crown Thy Good with Brotherhood Quilt

Sounds like a fun project and now you two have got me wanting to start another.
Here is a picture of an 80" square patriotic quilt I just finished. The center of the quilt started with the printed Eagle & Prairie Star panel from the American Valor collection and I pieced the remaining 4 prairie stars and the stripes and bear paws around that. JulieDeGrave, a very talented LAQ, quilted the quilt. I'll probably be posting it later this week when I get a chance to download more pictures. You all should see the amazing work Julie did on the eagle, which doesn't show up here. |
Glad you all want to join us. I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with.
thomp116, sure it counts. That looks like a cool pattern. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't even have to be a quilted item (am I allowed to say that on this forum? lol) We just want people to show their country colours and spirit. We will all encourage you to get it done in time. :) BuzzinBumble - no fair. You are too far ahead of us. lol The quilt looks amazing. Hope you DO decide to join us and do another item. My little British car club is trying to get a car show going for the local Canada Day celebrations. Someone else tried last year and it was a bust so it is our turn. I plan to show up in my red and white MINI with my new Canada Day quilt. The last few years we have been in the US for Canada Day so it will be nice to be on home soil for the celebration this year. So, I REALLY have to get my quilt done. |
I've already been planning a patriotic quilt to use as a fund raiser for our American Legion Auxiliary. I recently made a patriotic tote bag and gave it to them to use as a fund raiser for our Girls State project this summer. Our unit is sending 42 girls to Girls State at $300 each. So you can count me in.
|
Good to have you on board fmhall2 and nice to see it as a fundraiser.
|
works4me, Motor on in that Mini! Are you going to let the Mini dealership know? That might get some folks to come. Good luck with your quilt. The area you live in is lovely! My husband was raised in the greater BC area and we visit now and then, but it's too far to drive in a Mini, so can't join the fun!

Thanks for you're help Mary |
Hi coopah: Our car club managed 10 cars last year when we weren't even organizing the car show portion of the event so we can get a lot of people out. We are entering the 2006 MINI, not the 1974 Mini we have. We have received flack for the MINI previously but, once we tell people it is a special edition, 1 of only 64 in the world, and has 210 hp, they seem to appreciate it suddenly. We will also enter our 1960 Austin Healey Sprite Mk1 (BugEye) which we are just finishing. Later in the year, the BugEye is going on a 1500 mile three day tour and then a trip to Maryhill, Washington for the Car is King weekend. A trip to the far south would only be accomplished on a car trailer, I think.
Next time you visit, give me aheads up. Are you thinking of joining our challenge? craftymatt2/Mary: I honestly don't remember. I've been collecting fabrics for a while. The pattern, some of the flag fabric and I'm sure some of the red came from The Quilted Bear in Ladner, BC. The majority of my stash is from local quilt shops around Vancouver BC as well as from the sewing shows in the area. How much do you need? Once I finish the cutting I can see if there is any spare and send some your way. I hope you join us for this challenge. It doesn't have to be a full quilt if you are consumed by other projects, and aren't we all. |
Count me in.......I promised my son a quilt to use as a fundraiser for the Veterans in his local area. I'm working on half-square triangles now. Will post photos soon. Thanks for this nudge to get busy!
|
Count me in. I'm finishing a patriotic wall hanging, just binding to go. It is for our son's birthday the end of this month. Chad served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia. This wall hanging is to honor his service.
|
As QuiltE knows My PC quilt is Patriotic. I'll come here, ooo, awww, & chatter. One patriotic thing at a time! I love all things Patriotic. :)
I can't wait ta see all things Canadian. |

Can it be projects that have been previously completed? This is a wallhanging that was requested by a friend for a new family member that hailed from Canada. A blending of American and Canadian. They were thrilled with the result. I tried to stay to scale on placements for each flag, and had to make patterns for the stars (they were actually painted and then outline stitched) and the maple leaf (drawn freehand on a folded paper, then unfolded to have a symmetrical result). Here's some pics...

Count me in. It may not be as beautiful as those shown but I'll do something fun. :)

Peggy - I love how you combined the flags of our two countries! Thanks for describing how you did the stars. They look great!
|
peggymunday - that looks great.
The idea of the challenge is to do a new project for this year. Since you have done such a great larger project maybe you want to join us by making something small like placemats or pot holders or a mini quilt or ??? |
....... or a wall hanging? or mug rugs? or a lazy lap quilt? or? or? or?
And too, perhaps some would like to do something International? representing the homelands of friends they have met here on the Quilting Board? or? or? or? Sew Many Possibilities!!!!!!!! |

Thank you, I will try but I don't know if I'll get one finished in time. I have one quilt on the frame right now, another that needs to be completed that got bumped so this one could get finished, and then another when those are done that is waiting to be quilted. Where does the time go? :D Oh well, maybe I can at least inspire.... I have another that was also done awhile back and it hangs in our local library. They are very kind in offering me a space to showcase my work. Here are some pics... This is one of the wanta-gotta-do projects that I spotted during a Shop Hop last summer.
Patterns purchased in one ... and fabrics found in a different Hop. Please meet Monty the Mountie ... in his before state! And Maple Leaf Rags! One or the other, perhaps both will be completed before this year's Canada Day, July 1st! |
Does a Queen's Diamond Jubilee quilt count? I'm just finishing drawing the pattern, all the material is washed and ironed, and I hope to start sewing next week. There is no way it will be finished by the beginning of July, but the Jubilee lasts all year so I'm going to relax a bit..
Peggy - your double flag quilt is fantastic. |
Muv - Queen's Diamond Jubilee sounds fantastic to me, especially since she is Canada's Queen as well. Yes, it is definitely a celebration of country. I'm looking forward to seeing the pattern and progress.
QuiltE - Monty is adorable. Please do him first. I really like your Canada fabric. We may have to do some swapping at the end of this. |
Absolutely, Muv!!!!! ... and please do show us the beginnings. Perhaps your drawing? and fabric assortment? I'm really interested as to what you have planned and will look forward to seeing WIP pics, too. Me? a mini-Royalist ... I've always been intrigued by all things Royal, and have been picking up a few things lately, to honour her Diamond Jubilee ... a china mug, small plate, and a 1953 calendar with her Coronation photo.
Works4Me ... Of course when I saw him, he just had to follow me home. Sharing, yes, once we both know what we have as surplus! :) |
Count me in. I'm planning on doing a patriotic quilt to hang from my deck for Memorial day and July 4th.

You're counted KathyKat!!! We'll look forward to your creative wonders!! ....... although with a siggy like that, me-thinks that you should be doing something patriotically-green!!!!!!!!! :D |
I have a UFO that I started some time ago in solid primary colors. It is a very long table runner for my dining room table. I put it aside because it seemed too blah and I couldn't think how to perk it up. Perhaps this challenge is just the thing to bring it back to life. Wish me luck with creativity, I'll need it!

Hi works4me and QuiltE and everyone,
I would be proud and honoured to create a patriotic quilt. What a lovely idea to call out to everyone around the world. Good stuff. Mostly I think in Ontario and Eastern States it is the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. There was a quilt show at Sackett's harbour New York, in March (missed it darn it) I believe there is also one at Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, ON will get back to you on dates. I am excited to start planning this, never mind I have projects up to my eyeballs to do but this is exciting. Currently I'm working on the Underground Railroad will take pics and post by the weekend. Have a great day |
Welcome LinC!!! .... we're most happy to have you aboard this patriotic venture.
Yes! The War of 1812 is creating quite a stir in pockets all thru the province. I know that Simcoe County (Barrie, Midland, Orillia, Wasaga Beach, etc.) have quite a few significant locations and have already been having special events, with even more to come. What the heck, what's another project to take precedence over our stockpiles of PhDs? :D |
Hmmmm.... I really shouldn't :D but when has that ever stopped me! Okay.... I'll put my thinking cap on, can't imagine starting a full quilt with so many already in the works, but maybe a wallhanging or ???

Yeaaaaaaaaa ThimbleBug and Welcome!!!! ... you'll come up with something splendid, I'm sure! My Man Monty will be a long wall hanging .... or suitable for a door. |
LinC and thimblebug6000 welcome.
It looks like there will be a good variety of designs and that is great. Some never occurred to me like diamond jubilee and underground railway but they fit quite nicely as we never intended this to be strictly a flag-type quilt project. Of course, those type of projects work well, too, or mine wouldn’t fit the theme. lol None of us really have time for another project, do we? That’s why we encourage you to put on your thinking cap. Mini quilts, potholders, table runners, even BBQ aprons all count. How about a tote bag or sewing machine cover? Casserole holder? You could even make a pin cushion for the country in which your secret pal resides if you are part of the secret pal swap. See, it doesn’t have to be a huge project at all. J |
What a great idea!!
|
Thanks QM, hope you join in the fun.

Sorry, would like to join in on a new challenge, but can't. Sounds like really great fun! Just wanted to share a past patriotic quilt done for a church fundraiser. Also wanted to ask if there's anything 'not to miss' for a tourist in late May/early June in Canada?
|
Beautiful quilt.
What part of Canada will you be visiting? |
