I prefer mashed potatoes - not whipped - a friend of mine used the mixer for hers. But at our house it all depends on the potatoes and how tired I am when it is time to mash them. Sometimes they seem to stay lumpy, which is fine with everyone since no one else wants to do it.

I used to have the same debate over the sweet potatoes. whipped vs. whole. what a pain.
The past few yrs, it's been dh and son and what a quiet non fighting day it is. and We don't
care anymore, whatever is the easiest. Some families are to toxic for holidays for me.
Lumpy means they are real, and as someone already suggested, if they let you, get them when they are half mashed,
unless it's like my famly and you only get what they want you to have.
very good debat question.

This is a funny post for me. I remember how hard my mother would work, with her hand held potato masher, to make the mashed potatoes lump free and fluffy. She incorporated a lot of real home made butter in them and then artfully mounded them in a bowl with a big dollop of butter on top. Yum. I loved them. But all that work is probably why we didn't have them very often. Good memories.'

My family loves my mashed potatoes. I usually only make them for holiday meals. (not due to all the work, just the carbs). Almost smooth, from red potatoes. No peals. Even though I like some peals left. I had knee surgery recently so my 30 something kids are cooking all the meal, should be interesting.

DH loves lumpy, I love smooth--Now I just boil the potatoes and leave them unmashed and if any one wants mashed they can do it on their plate. Actually I really love just plain boiled redskin with a lot a gravy...
