I know that all the recipes posted on here have been for people of the human nature. I have a sick fur-baby and I am wanting to make Chicken and Rice for her in the crockpot. I have never cooked rice in a crockpot before. She has an upset tummy and I think this would be bland enough for her to eat.

I have looked online and all the recipes I see have condensed or powdered soup in them. Can anyone tell if and how rice can be cooked in the cp? I feel like I am old enough to know this already but I don't. Any help is greatly appreciated by myself and Missy. She is like my baby to me. She belonged to my son so she is special to me. I know others on here can relate. We love our fur-babys.

Do you have a microwave? I think the rice would turn out much better. you can cook chicken or hamburger in the microwave also to mix with the rice. That is what I always did when I had sick dogs and they loved it. Drain all the grease off the hamburger first. I hope your baby is soon feeling better.

My sister has a Chahuahua ( sorry about spelling) and when she got sick the vet had her fix chicken and rice and she used chicken broth to cook the rice. Im sorry but dont know about doing it in crockpot.

I had to do the same several years ago for one of my fur babies, I just cooked the chicken and rice on the stove, separate pans though, then mixed the broth from the chicken with the rice. I also gave her cottage cheese, she would eat the cottage cheese before the chicken or rice. lol

I had to do this for my golden when he was sick and i just cooked the rice on the stove - usually 2 x water to the rice. My vet told me it was extremely important not to use seasoning; no salt, pepper, flavoring or other spices as dogs don't process them very well. I measured out what I needed then stored the reat in the refrigerator.

Why don't you do it on top of the stove. I use 2 cups of water to one cup of rice, or you can use chicken brothe instead of water, put the rice in cold. Bring it to a boil and then put lid on and reduce to simmer until the broth is absorbed and the rice will be done. Fluff it with a fork. It'll be a lot quicker than in a crock pot. Now if you use brown rice you'll need to add more broth because it takes a lot longer to cook.

Substitute the water with chicken broth to make it more palatable. My breadmaker also has instructions for making rice in it and I have tried it and it works fine.

Another quick idea: I always keep a supply of Boil in a Bag, by Minute Rice. The little bags of rice boil up real quick and just the right portion for 2-3 servings. I just spoon out small serving, wrap up the remaining, put it in a ziplock bag and store in the frig till next feeding.
Along the chicken thread, you might also want to try boiling up Chicken livers or gizzards, and give just the broth. Very tasty and has lots of nutrients. Smell is horrible to us humans but it's worth it to see the dogs lap it up when they won't eat anything else. The liver and gizzards are rich, so I save those and cut them up for later and feed them sparingly when the dogs are eating better. Another good soft diet food is to soft scramble up an egg with just a tad of butter. All of these things have worked for me for years with small (Scottie dog) or large (Bernese Mtn Dogs)
Just feed small portions 3-4 times a day. Good luck. I know your heart is aching.

Why don't you just throw a whole chicken in a pot of water to make your own broth, bring to boil then simmer about 1 hr, take chicken out when cooked, discard bones and skin and put the meat back in the broth with some uncooked rice for another 20 minutes or so? Think chicken soup with extra rice and no veggies and it's way quicker than a slow cooker. You can even make it low fat by pulling the skin off the chicken and trimming visible fat before cooking. You won't have any extra seasonings to irritate your little dogs system, and you can put any extra in the fridge for later.
