I love using the Fuji apples for apple butter! They really make a big difference in the taste. I also use the apple cider to cook them in. I use the recipe from an old better homes and gardens canning book. I love making the peach butter, jams and chow chow too.

Have any of you done it in the slow cooker? I cut up the apples and cook in the slow cooker on low until the apples are soft [I help them along with my stick bleender] them add spice that the family likes and cook for a couple more hours. then jar it and boil bath just to seal the jars. this work's realy well for us working folks. I have put the apple in at night just before gone to bed cook on warm all night and add spice before work and come home and can. and then do it again the next night until and apple are done, it is slow but your don't have stand over the apple all day and make should they don't burn.

Crock Pot Apple Butter
1/2 Peck or 5# Grimes or Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
Place in Crock Pot with 1 Cup apple Juice or Apple cider, cook on high, with lid on, about 4 hours.
Mash with a potato masher...Add:
3 Tablespoons Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 Cup Apple cider Vinegar
1 Pound of Dark Brown Sugar
Cook on low, Uncovered, for another 6 hours, stirring occasionally.
Thickens as it cools.
Place in hot sterile jars and water bath.
I just put mine in jars, or plastic containers and refrigerate, no water bath.
My kids love this, especially my Grandson. He always returns the jar, and says its time for a re-fill Nanny!

Guess I need to head to the farm this weekend to pick up some apples. The crock pot is my best friend so I'll be using one of those recipes. Thanks a bunch

What a coincidence -- I just peeled and cored 20 lbs of apples and made applesauce then stuck it in the crock pot for apple butter. The link you sent is the recipe I use and it is fabulous. I also make pumpkin butter with a crock pot - almost as good as apple, and has less calories and carbs in it.

I like this method. You can use any spices you like. This way you do not have to worry about it scorching. I think you could use almost any recipe in the crock pot.

I use the recipe in the "Ball Canning Book". It's a tried and true recipe. I cook my apples down in cider instead of water--adds extra flavor. Then I cook it down til it's very thick & dark brown. I think I used yellow delicious and Macintosh. UM-M-M good. I canned it in pint jars. Tastes so good on toast!!
