I just wing it so I can't give you an exact recipe. I drain 2 cans of tuna packed in spring water. I break it up with a fork in a big bowl. I add 1 finely chopped green onion. I add about 1 cup of thinly sliced celery for the crunch ( I use my mandolin) I boil one 375 g. package of whole wheat elbow macaroni until a la dente, run cold water through them in my colander, drain and add it to the tuna mixture when cool. I add spoonfuls of Miracle Whip until I get how I like it ( a little moist because it takes up moisture in the fridge) I sprinkle in some salt and pepper, mix it all up and refrigerate.

Bobbielinks 03-09-2013 05:06 PM

I just drain 2 cans of tuna, add Miracle Whip, sweat pickle relish, onions, and chopped eggs to suit my taste buds.

I buy StarKist, chunk light tuna. On the pkg, it says fresher tasting , no draining , there is no water or juice in it. It comes in an aluminum packing. You cut the top off and it is really dry. Then I add boiled eggs, salad pickles, celery (if I have it), mayo, green bell pepper(If I have it). Doesn't get any water/juice from the tuna but a small amount after a couple of days (if it lasts that long) from the salad pickles.

nancyw 03-10-2013 04:24 AM

I like it simple tuna, mayonnaise( I use quite a bit because I like it moist, you can always adjust the moistener) and celery. I like crunch in mine. If I using it as a salad I add elbow macaroni.

I use Chicken of the Sea albacore in water.I drain it and add celery a drop or 2 of vinegar and mayonnaise. My granddaughter likes it without the vinegar but with a few drops of pickle juice.

I like tuna, dill pickles, celery, carrots, egg and mayo. I don't like Miracle Whip. (That can probably stuart a huge discussion, It does in my family) Sometimes I skip the eggs and pickles and add some chopped dried cranberries and pecans and poppy seeds. Peppers are good in it too. Or you can skip the mayo and mash an avacado with a little lemon juice instead.

tutt 03-10-2013 07:00 AM

I've always made it with a head of chopped up lettuce, carrots, pickle relish (sweet and dill), onions and mayo.

ziegamomma 03-10-2013 07:02 AM

To a small drained can of tuna, add 2 chopped boiled eggs, half of a chopped apple and sandwich spread. Sandwich spread is basically mayo with a little tomato and chopped sweet pickles added, but I prefer to use the sandwich spread.

saveaquilt 03-10-2013 07:51 AM

Mine is basic like most of these but I will add dill weed and parsley for flavor. Give it a try.

themachinelady 03-10-2013 07:57 AM

bobbielinks, that is what I do too, varying the ingredients until I get the taste I want. Then use it for sandwiches or on a lettuce leaf. Have also stuffed it in tomatoes after hollowing out the tomato and it is good there as well.

Dretha 03-10-2013 08:09 AM

I make it with tuna packed in water, a little mustard, boiled eggs (usually 2), onion, dill relish(we dont like sweet relish), and salad dressing (instead of real mayo). Hope this helps

anorton 03-10-2013 10:03 AM

Ditto to all above, but try adding a little yellow mustard and diced apple for a different taste. Yum!

Yes!!! Mouth is watering, that's lunch im heading to make it right now!

I use StarKist chunk white in water, add mayo, salt, pepper, dill weed (it really cuts the fishy taste of the tuna, which I don't like and Pampered Chef has a dill/garlic spice that is perfect), pickle relish, chives or onion, and capers if I have them to add a salty twist.

noveltyjunkie 03-10-2013 12:18 PM

Chop a tomato and remove the seeds. Chop cucumber. Add corn niblets and spring onion. Add drained tuna. Wet it with whatever you like. (I like mayo.)

adamae 03-10-2013 02:20 PM

I use tuna packed in olive oil, chopped boiled eggs, celery, chopped very fine, a little minced onion, relish and mayo. If stored in frig and gets watery, add instant potato flakes. A little change of pace is a dab of dry mustard. This is also good with chopped chicken instead of tuna.

sandyl 03-10-2013 03:03 PM

I also have added chopped apple to my tuna salad. Along with the celery, and pickle relish and mayo.sometimes boiled eggs.

Rose Bagwell 03-10-2013 04:23 PM

2 cans Tuna ( drained if needed ),sweet pickle relish or chopped pickles , 2 boiled eggs, 1 stalk celery finely chopped, stuffed pimento olives, chopped fine, sprinkle all season salt (to your liking ) amounts really depend on what you like . I use mayonaise and mix all this together.

Reading this thread has made me wonder. Why do we call it tuna fish? We all know a tuna is a fish. Why not salmon fish instead of salmon fish? I know, too much time on my hands, going back to my sewing room now.

I love tuna. Tried all different brands, even Kirkland Albacore...Starkist in water, most preferred. 2 cans (drained), mayo, celery, onion, and pickle relish (mostly dill, sometimes feel like sweet), sometimes hardboiled egg chopped very fine. Saw Ina Garten put in fresh fennel. I tried it and it is good...go light on the fennel.

quilter68 03-11-2013 08:19 AM

Everything listed on this thread at one time or another plus I always put fresh potato chips on the sandwich for cruncyness.

I hadn't thought of that but sounds good - will give it a try this week. Thanks,

Hi, not really a salad, but you could eat it cold, I serve it with a side salad.
Fry a finely chopped onion in a little butter and some of the drained oil from a tin of tuna, don't brown the onion.
Put into a dish, you can add some canned, drained sweetcorn to this, then add flaked tuna. make a white cheese sauce, adding some grated nutmeg
Cook some macaronni pasta. mix together with the sauce. add to the tuna and onion mix.Top with breadcrumbs mixed with grated cheese and place under the grill until brown and bubbling. I serve this with a mixed salad. My husbands favourite summer dish. Letty

I made my favorite recipe for a class meeting 25-30 years ago. I added some finely chopped pecans and about 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper and those who ate it raved about it. I used 2 cans of tuna, for my base. I haven't made it in years so don't remember the exact recipe now. But mostly I wing it when I make it.

OHSue 03-11-2013 07:18 PM

Same recipe as mine, but sometimes I use the envelopes of tuna if they are one sale.

sewdarnbusy 03-16-2013 05:38 AM

My favorite Tuna Sandwich:
Tuna (Costco's Kirkland brand Tuna by Bumblebee is BEST, NO MSG/chicken broth added)
Mayo, Chopped: celery, apples (apples neutralize the fishy taste... it mocks chicken) & sweet pickles, crunchy lettuce, avocado on Oatmeal Bread.

i use very well drained tuna, generally white as that's dh's preference, and add half a small well-chopped onion ( if you have non-onion eaters leave the pieces big enough to pull out), about 2-3 tablespoons of mayo ( or miracle whip, depending on your crowd. we are mayo people), at this point you can add a tablespoon plain yogurt if you need more moistness, and i chop up about 1/2 an qpple with or without peel. with the peel is pretty. and about a teaspoon of sweet relish, or dill relish, again it's a personal taste thing. then salt and pepper to taste. a little lemon or lime juice is a nice touch. some people enjoy some pecan pieces or walnut bits, but i'm allergic so never include them. if i want more crunch i add celery, chopped water chestnut or cucumber. personally, i love well drained tuna with just enough mayo, and salt and pepper to taste. my mother made it with mustard ( the yellow kind) but that was never to my taste. add dried or fresh parsley, dried or fresh dill, or a small amount of curry powder. tuna is sooooo versatile! i even like freshly picked peas or freshly thawed peas gently mixed in. and i've had it with cream cheese added to the mayo. it's also good with sliced green grapes. to cut down on fat totals, use a little applesauce to replace some of the mayo or miracle whip. i almost forgot that i like to add chopped olives, either green with/without pimiento, or black, hard cooked egg and a touch of nutmeg, finely chopped pear, cilantro, pick and choose! it's all good! and i love it on toasted cinnamon raisin bread! and if i don't have that i've been known to toss in a few raisins. i also love it served in a lettuce leaf cup, or a hollowed out tomato or smallish green pepper. so many ways to eat it, and all are yummy!

My fam loves my tuna, but I'm not sure if it's that good, or if they are happy to not have to make it: :-O
Starkist tuna in water, drained
1/2 amount of mayo needed
1/4 amount of mustard
1/4 amount of sour cream
Add 3 chopped boiled eggs and chopped dill pickles.

My wife used to make the tuna for her sister's restaurant and we've made it like that ever since. Tuna packed in water drained well, sweet or dill relish, mayo or miracle whip, finely diced onion, and 6 finely crushed saltine crackers. It's great that way.
