Canning recipe for Pear Relish
Pear Relish
2 qt washed and peeled ground pears 3 lbs onions peeled and ground 7 mixed red and green bell pepper seeded and ground 1 hot pepper, seeded and ground 2 tbsp salt 3 cups sugar 1 tbsp turmeric ½ tbsp celery seed 3 tbsp prepared mustard 5 tbsp flour 1 cup vinegar + 2 cup vinegar Finely chop ingredients in food processor. Mix pears, onions, peppers in porcelain pan and set aside. Mix salt, turmeric, sugar, celery seed, mustard, flour and 1 cup vinegar in large boiling pan. Cook until thick stirring while cooking. Add 2 cups vinegar and mix well. Pour mixture over pears and vegetables. Bring to a boil for 15 minutes stirring to prevent sticking. Seal in sterilized jars. Place in hot water bath. Boil for 10 minutes. Let relish set for 4-6 weeks before using. Makes 11 Pints. Great for hot dog relish or a meat rub. Belinda Duehr |
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I can from spring to summer. I give all my canning away and everyone is so thrilled with new items. I use Harry and Davids, pepper-onion relish for a glaze on my meat loaves. They are a hit no matter where I take them. I mix with other things to make the glaze. The point is, new recipes give me so much to think about and this is one I will use up some of the frozen pears from this summer. Thanks again, a new recipe is like a new friend to me. gennie

Happy to see this recipe. Growing up I would never eat my green beans without pear relish. Have tried several recipes and they've always been missing something. Think this is the one I remember. Thanks for sharing.

Someone gave me some pears the other day; my husband said I should make some pear relish like his mother used to do. (She died in 1995; hubby is 65) I said recipe went out the door with other relatives. Such a coincidence that your recipe would show up in a very unlikely spot, especially after we discussed it & especially since I very rarely even glance at the recipe section. Who would think to look at a quilt site for recipes? Everything happens for a reason!! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe; I can hardly wait to try it.
