Favorite Sloppy Joe Recipe

Looking for a quick sloppy joe recipe. There are hundred's out there, but I don't have the time to try them all. What's your favorite sloppy joe recipe?

himnherr 01-07-2013 04:54 PM

Mine is what I grew up with. No measurements so its just by taste. Brown ground beef seasoned with garlic, salt & pepper. Drain any grease off. Now dump ketchup and yellow mustard in it. Stir it up adding more of both until its the consistency you want. I don't like mine soupy- I like it to stick to the bun- not fall off. I add cayenne pepper when I get ketchup mustard ratio right.
I also do mass quantity cooking (200-250) for lunches when my husband & I do volunteer work. When we have sloppy joes this is my recipe. We NEVER get anything but compliments. Give it a try!

Well, for some reason my reply dropped the link to Pioneer Woman's recipe. Here it is

Just in case you might want something a little different ....

My aunt called these 'Western burgers'.

Brown ground beef like you were making sloppy joes, drain the oil.

Now the different part :)

Add cubes of Velveta cheese. Just keep adding until all the beef is coated to your taste (similar to the amount of 'sloppy' you like in your sloppy joe). Now add sliced black olives.

That's it.

We used to make a big pot full, fill the buns and wrap them in foil and freeze them. Then just pop the whole thing in the oven to warm - bun gets nice and toasty.

Hmmm ... want to make a big pot now.

I brown some hamburger and some chopped up onion. Then I add a small can of tomato sauce with a spoon full of brown sugar mixed in. Then I put a little vinegar in the can and swish it around and add that. Then I add some ketchup and mustard - a good squirt each. Some times I add a quarter to half cup of quick oats. Cook it a little while. We put it on buns or on rice.

If you're looking for quick and easy, filling and flavorful, try this recipe, it's my families favorite

Fry 1 lb. hamburger with a small chopped onion so hamburger is done and at a fine consistancy
Add 2 Tbsp. mustard
1 can chicken gumbo soup
1/2 Tsp. soy sauce
1/4 cup catsup (+ to taste)
salt and pepper
Simmer at least 20 minutes

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 01-08-2013 05:32 AM

Everyone I make this for loves it, although I'm not a big BBQ fan.

1/2 cup onion
3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 cup catsup
2 Tablespoons vinegar
4 Tablespoons lemon juice
2 Tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 Tablespoon dry mustard
1/2 cup water
Brown meat and drain. Add other ingredients. Simmer 15-20 minutes covered. Serve on hamburger rolls. If you like it a little spicier you can add just a shake of bottled BBQ sauce.

Needles 01-08-2013 05:49 AM

My barbecue sauce is made with the same ingredients as your recipe, Quilt Till Y Wilt. I always have a bowl of it in my refrigerate. So I just fry the hamburger with more onion and add the sauce until I get the consistency I want. Some times I just make sloppy joes with a can of mushroom soup after frying the meat and onion.

susiequilt 01-08-2013 06:05 AM

I use a recipe similar to the ioneer women except use chili sauce instead of ketchup.

time2quilt 01-08-2013 08:56 AM

This is my favorite.....makes a lot and freezes well. Sloppy Joes - 4 lbs. hamburger, 1 cup onion, chopped, 14 oz. bottle catsup, 1 cup water, 2 T. brown sugar, 1 T. worcestershire, 1 T. salt, 2 tsp. vinegar, 1 tsp. mustard. Brown hamburger and onion, drain, add remaining ingredients, simmer and spoon onto hamburger buns. Also good on noodles, rice or baked potatoes.

Wow, I can't wait for the weekend! I'll let you know which one I try first.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 01-08-2013 11:51 AM

OK -- I'll admit to being lazy. I've tried dozens of sloppy joe recipes and none have been better than Manwhich. I use 2 lb of hamburger to one can of sauce.

mstalnaker 01-08-2013 12:11 PM

I have used the Pioneer Womans recipe and it's my favorite so far.

Twisted Quilter 01-08-2013 01:37 PM

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter, I'm going to try your sloppy joe's too. Quick is gooooood!

KimmerB 01-08-2013 02:48 PM

I use this oldie but goodie for small or large groups. If you like it less spicy only use 1 tsp chili powder. I put the amounts for 38 servings in () this fits in a Nesco.

1 LB ground beef (13 Lbs)
1/2 Cup chopped onion (3 cups)
1/2 cup chopped celery (2 1/2 cups)
1/4 cup chopped bell peppers (2 1/2 cups)
1/2 of a 7 oz bottle of catsup (#6 - 20 oz or #4- 32 oz)
2 Tbls vinegar (1 cup)
2 Tbls brown sugar (1 1/2 cups)
1 tsp prepared mustard (4 Tbls)
1 Tbls chili powder (2 1/2 Tbls)

Brown beef, onions, celery and bell peppers- pour off grease then add rest of ingredients and simmer.

My son who is all grown up now use to rave about the sloppy joes his friend's mom made. Well, I finally asked for her recipe and she said, "it's just Manwich!" So that's what I use still, 10 years later! It IS good!

saveaquilt 01-08-2013 07:55 PM

I've tried several homemade recipes but like Manwich Sauce in the can the best. Quick, easy and delicious.

I was trying to make my own Sloppy Joe mix. One pound ground meat browned with onion and bell pepper. Drain. To the mixture add 1 can of original Rotel tomatoes, 1 T. ketcup,1 t. mustard, salt & pepper to taste and the secret ingredient is at least 1/4 c. brown sugar.

I hope my memory has served me well tonight and passed along a good recipe.

quilter1 01-09-2013 06:45 AM

Sloppy Joes are my DH's favourite, they were a birthday staple as he grew up. His Mom told me how she made them. He turned 62 last year and this was his request for supper on his birthday.
brown 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, drain the fat. Add an onion and celery and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the veggies are soft. Add 1 can chicken gumbo soup, 1/2 can chili sauce, a good squirt of mustard, simmer for 10 minutes or so (or longer). Serve on buns or toast with pickles and potato chips.

Twisted Quilter 01-09-2013 10:04 AM

KimmerB and a few others had very similar recipes so I think I'm going to try it first. I'm also lazy, so I'm going to put the Manwich & ground beef in 2nd place. Rainbow66 & quilter1 both use chicken gumbo in their sloppy joes. Sounds like an interesting twist. Moved this recipe up to 3rd place.

Keep the recipes coming!

tenngal 01-10-2013 03:07 PM

I brown one pound of ground beef and onions, add a large can of tomato sauce and heat through. Then put it on a bun with some pickle relish - yum!

debbieoh 01-10-2013 04:34 PM

Manwich LOL!!

craftymatt2 01-12-2013 03:45 PM

Use Manwich, i love it and it comes in a can, fast and easy and yummy

2 lbs. hamburger, 2/3 of a 14 oz. bottle catsup, 1 T. worcestershire or to your tast. Brown hamburger , drain, add remaining ingredients,NOW FOR THE SECRET........ 7up soda ( must be 7up regurlar ) to get the sloppy part just as you like it. simmer and spoon onto hamburger buns. Drink rest of 7up as you simmer to the thickness you like

sherrielynn 01-13-2013 01:04 PM

My recipe is from my Junior high/High school days. The cooks called them "beefburgers." Still my favorite way for a sloppy Joe. Brown ground beef, drain, add a couple tablespoons of mustard and ketchup, more of either, depending on your taste preference, add one can CHICKEN GUMBO soup, no water. Let simmer til heated well. Serve on buns. You can pick up but a fork is handy for the drops. Love them!!

new2q 01-15-2013 07:18 AM

I make it all of the time.....Ground beef, Onions, catsup, regular yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar. The catsup, mustard, worcestershire sauce and brown sugar is to taste. (it does take a lot of catsup) I don't care for the mustard taste so I use very little.......My secret is when you brown your ground beef and onions.....add salt and peper and at least 2 teaspoons of garlic powder. When you drain your meat you lose a lot the garlic.....I have made it with and without the garlic and everybody says without the garlic...it is just missing something.

Wow, a co-worker gave me her recipe for sloppy joes that I loved, but lost the recipe. Actually, I think I lost it before I got home. Anyway, they were the best sloppy joes EVER! The only ingredient I remember was ginger ale. This has got to be it. The next time I make sloppy joes I'm going to give this one a shot.

Thanks for sharing!
