Food for a small Quilting Bee event
I am a new quilter and I have recently joined a group of 6 other ladies who get together most Monday evenings for quilting and fellowship.
They take turns hosting the quilting in their homes and it is quite enjoyable. We met from 5-9 p.m. and we usually have a simple meal together furnished by the hostess. Next Monday is my turn and I wonder if any of you have done this before and have some suggestions. I'm leaning towards: My homemade tomato-based vegetable soup (home grown veggies), Cornbread, salad, cookies, tea. Does that seem too plain? They have been doing this awhile and while I've known them through work and community for a long time, I am new to the quilting group. Have any of you done this before? Any suggestions? Kinda anxious about it all. Dray - SE Oklahoma |
It sounds absolutely wonderful to me!

I agree. Yummy!
|
I do this frequently. Your menu sounds fine..just don't forget the chocolate! LOL
|
Looks absolutely delicious!
I'd totally enjoy your menu. The only thing I would do differently, would be to add some protein .... it doesn't need to be a "meat" per se. Perhaps ... meat in the soup? cheese(s) to cut off and eat with the soup and bread? cheese, chopped meat or chicken and/or nuts in the salad? etc. |
Wish I could be there! Sounds great to me.
|
Sounds yummy! Let me know when it is on. LOL
As for meat in the soup, how about some very small meatballs for in the soup and some grated cheddar cheese to put on top of the soup. |

Your menu sounds great to me. I am assuming you have attended at least a couple meetings and should be able to judge the type of meal they expect by what was served at those you attended. I sure hope you aren't being asked to serve at your very first meeting!

Thanks for the encouragement. :) I like the idea of the meatballs in it as well as cheese that can be added if desired. And I hadn't thought of hot chocolate...it's getting a little cooler now so that would be perfect.
I am trying for something that will be tasteful but not to difficult to put together. Thanks again for the advise. Dray - SE Oklahoma |

That all sounds wonderful and filling. When I eat soup, I like a small sandwich of some kind. My favorite with home made vegetable soup is peanut butter. Grilled cheese would be good also. About any kin of finger sandwiches would work. Have fun and enjoy, the main thing.

How could we all have forgotten ?? ........... don't forget the chocolate! :)

Tiny meatballs are easy to make ahead by baking ,then bag & freeze. You can remove them as needed.Be sure to use non stick foil or parchment paper to line the cookie sheet.

Our club does a small tidbits after the meeting. For November meeting I made pumpkin bars, had corn candy,
Made beer bread and spinach dip from Tastefully Simple. They loved it. |
Sounds great to me, candy kisses tops it off. How do you make your tomato veggie soup?

We have a small group called Soup and Sew. The hostess always makes a pot of soup and serves bread and cookies. It is very simple and easy to serve without lots of utensils etc. One of the gals even grinds her own grain so her bread, biscuits etc. are fabulous.
|
Hey, sounds wonderful to me. If the group is so fussy about fancy food, drop them. You can't do better than Soup and cornbread. Add anything else. You're going to sew, not have a big "dinner". Do it. They'll love it! By the way, if people start getting really fancy, it will get out of hand. Stick with your original menu.
|
That sounds good. You could also have chicken breasts and salad, bread and something for dessert.
|
If you're making the cookies, you could cut them into quilt shapes. Half square triangles, some white, some chocolate. The soup and cornbread sounds wonderful. I have a bunco group and when I made soup they were thrilled.

Your soup sounds delicious and I don't even like vegetables.

Your menu sounds delicious! For an easy salad, sometimes at our house we make "finger salad". It's really just a "relish tray". We don't use dip, but you could offer it. Another easy salad would be a layered salad that needs to be made ahead, so it's great for company. It has cheese in it (protein) and would also be good with bacon or shrimp layered into it. The last time DD and I made it, we put sliced hard-boiled egg on top. I'd be glad to post the recipe if you'd like it.
|
I wouldn't worry about enough protein just for one meal, I agree with others, your menu is fine and sounds delicious. :)

Wish I could Join for the Fun!
|
Dray, it sounds marvelous to me. Can I come????? :)
|
I always believe it's not so much about what is on the table as who is in the chair. They'll be delighted someone fixed dinner for them.
|
There is a good recipe on kraftsfoods.com for creamy chicken spaghetti that is always a hit when I make it. It has Rotel, stir-fry veggies and cream cheese. Quick, easy and good.
|
It sounds great. Those lucky ladies getting home grown vegetables. Wish I could join you.
|
That sounds wonderful, may I come over too

Your meal is good. I also have a large and a small quilting group that I meet with. The last time I served a baked potato bar. The ladies enjoyed trying the different toppings for the potatoes. With that I served a relish tray with vegies and a light desert. I alway do a baked potato bar for the neighbors at Christmas and they seem to enjoy it. I always have vegies with it and a variety of Christmas cookies. FUN! FUN! FUN!
We love to entertain and do quite often. |
Sounds great to me.
|
my event went very well...except I burned the cookies...LOL but everything went off well and now we have something to laugh about.
|
Our group meets at each others house at 10 am on Wednesdays. The hostess is responsible for the desset and a pot of coffee. We bring our own lunch and drinks. More time to quilt or do handwork.
Your dinner sounds delicous. |
That menu sounds wonderful. I would certainly enjoy it.
