Need recipe

I used to call my mother ever year in the summer for a recipe on how much of what to put with cucumbers onions and I know it has vinegar in it but don't know how much or what else it has in it but now that she's passed,I thought maybe someone here might know. Thank you in advance for any reply.

sweet and sour----equal parts water-- vinegar --sugar -----if you like onions ...add more if you only have 2 cukes 1/3 cup each ......party bowl -use cup of each

glad somebody has the proportions ... I always have to search through a bunch of recipes before I find one that works. Maybe one of these days I'll remember it.

Wow.....so happy this came up. We are in Tennessee visiting daughter and her inlaws and she got some tomatoes/cucumbers and asked if I knew the formula for this. I didn't. This all came about today, so tomorrow when she serves dinner, I will have the recipe.

The recipe I make uses vinegar (or lemon juice) and sour cream. The amount depends on how many cucumbers and onions I cut up.

I leave out the water as the vinegar pulls water from the cukes and onions. I keep a bowl of this in my fridge all summer. Will add to it a couple times before it becomes too diluted. Then it is tossed and I start a new bowl.

My mom uses M. Whip, vinegar, and sugar. She does not measure anything. Just does it to taste.
Looks like about 1 cup MW, couple Tablespoons or more vinegar and 1/4 cup sugar-- That is what it looked liked when she mixed it up. NO RECIPE.

We do both the vinegar method and the cream method. At our house we like to add some finely chopped fresh dill when we have it. Delicious!

Recipe for Cukes

My mom mixed cucumbers and onions together and poured vinegar over them. I loved it but later on after I married one of my BIL's used Italian dressing instead of the vinegar. Boy it was so much better I started using the Italian dressing and never looked back. Cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, a little pasta if you wish and Italian dressing. Let it set covered in the refrig for about a hour before serving. It's really good.

My mother made this also, mine never tastes quite as good as hers....vinegar, sugar, sm amt of water..
We have been using cukes, red onions, tomatoes, with balsamic dressing on it also...very good.

My kids loved the vinegar/sugar/salt/pepper recipe on cucumbers without the onions. One son enjoyed it so much he used to beg to drink the vinegar after the cucumbers were done. I must have put too much sugar in it!!!--HaHa

Love this one!

Hi.....have any of you tried Newman's balsamic vinegar and olive oil?? The best! I also use about equal parts vinegar and water, with a touch of salt, for the cucumbers/tomatoes/onion concoction! Don't usually put sugar in it, but will try that suggestion.

A timely post I can use as my neighbor shares his crop of cucumbers with me every year.

I do cukes, thinly sliced with sour cream and equal parts (or to taste) vinegar and sugar

SassyChic 07-04-2013 03:27 PM

I grew up in an Amish area. We put a little celery seed in the mix and you can add a touch of sugar. Good luck!

I am from Wrightsville and my long time friends are the Wolfs. Funny to see a post from Mt Wolf

A way to fix cucumbers. Use rice vinegar a little sweetner and some ginger if you like. The rice vinegar is milder and you do not need to use water. Also just sprinkle the vinegar over them, not soak them in it. They stay nice and crisp for a couple of days.

Our family recipe calls for 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup cider vinegar and 1/2 cup water. We heat it to completely dissolve the sugar then let it come to room temperature. We like the English, no seed cucumber sliced thin with an onion sliced thin as well. While the vinegar mixture is cooling we lightly salt the cucumbers then drain liquid off when vinegar mixture is cooled. When cool the vinegar mixture is stirred into the cucumbers. At this point you may or may not add diced, fresh tomatoes...we like the little Italian tomatoes . You may use more than 1 cucumber if they are not large

Thanks for this recipe. My mom always made this but could not remember the recipe....

My hubby uses equal parts Vinegar and water. Then slices up Walla Walla sweet onions Or Vidalia sweet onions and cukes and lets them soak covered with the solution at least overnight. He sometimes uses Rice wine Vinegar instead of white vinegar to "Mix it up" a bit. My Dad used to make this also when I was a child and nor he or my hubby add sugar.

Best Food Mayo, vinegar & milk.

quiltingcandy 07-05-2013 09:57 PM

My mom did just the vinegar and ice water - let the onions and cucumbers soak for several hours. My FIL said they were the same his mother made. The Walla Walla sweets or Vidallia onions really make it to die for. Neither my husband nor my daughters like it - so very rare when I make it. We used to have a German restaurant that would serve it. Yum!

Thanks for posting. My husb was just asking me for a recipe to cream cukes and onions. I didn't have a clue. Now he can take his choice!

CherryPie 07-13-2013 05:14 PM

I use seasoned rice vinegar on my cukes and onions. I usually use the whole bottle and slice 2-3 cukes (depending on size) and an onion. The seasoned vinegar has just enough sweetness that you don't need to add sugar and the vinegar is not strong. Now you've got me wanting my cucumbers to hurry up so I can have some. lol I've never had the creamed cucumbers but will have to give them a try.

patchsamkim 07-14-2013 10:01 AM

I do without the sour cream, but have used fat-free yogurt. I also like adding some dill.
