I love figs. Are they fresh or dried? I have never cooked with them but I would think you could use them like dates in date bars?

Barb in Louisiana 08-01-2012 04:51 AM

First, wash the figs you want to eat now. Then, pull the stem off with about 20% of the surrounding skin. Pop into your mouth & enjoy. A ripe fig should be kinda mushy. If it is not ripe, you will get a fuzzy taste in your mouth & the figs won't be that good.

Years ago I made canned figs using a recipe that called for Strawberry Jello. The result was a jam that tasted like strawberry preserves. http://www.food.com/recipe/Strawberr...reserves-60744

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/e...ipe/index.html This should be another good recipe. The figs are great on pancakes & biscuits.

If you are only making a very small batch, you could just keep in the fridge. Wish I had me some figs. I love them fresh right off the tree.

Check out www.foodgawker.com. That is one of my favorite recipe sites. Searching for fig brought up over 1,000 recipes. I really enjoyed the fig muffins I made.

I would give the rest of my teeth for some good fig preserves!

If you have a dehydrator you can dry them. They make yummy snacks. Keep them in the fridge afterwards, especially if you live in a hot climate. They might mold a bit if left to the heat. I dried several gallons this year for family members.

I know many people like the "fake strawberry" jam, made with figs . . . but personally . . . YUK! Just make fig preserves/jam!!! Don't ruin those beautiful figs, with fake flavoring! :(

Fig ice cream is also verrrrrrrrry yummy!!!

You can also clean them, then freeze them. YUMMY, even frozen!!!

Mitch's mom 08-02-2012 03:40 PM

They're really best fresh off the bush/tree! If there is a lot of the white next to the skin, I prefer to just eat the yummy pink middle. Some figs have lots of white, others it is very thin...We used to have one little fig bush (only about 2-1/2 ft tall) that had the sweetest, juiciest little figs. I loved them. Our other two fig bushes were probably 8-10 feet tall with the great big figs that my mom made into preserves. But the little ones, we just ate (and ate, and ate).

Just today while waiting around in the dentist's office I came upon a recipe in a People magazine that was a banana bread with 1 1/2 cups of figs added. I didn't get to read it closely. It was probably dried figs, but I see no reason why fresh ones wouldn't work, and I plan to try it the next time I make banana bread.

Oh, love fresh figs!!
I make Fig Pinwheels for breakfast. Use a biscquit dough, roll out to a rectangle. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon, chopped figs and chopped walnuts. Dot with butter and roll up. I usually put it into the freezer while I set the coffee pot on and make an orange sugar glaze. Then take it out and slice it into1/2" to 1" rounds and place on a parchment covered cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for anout 15 minutes or til golden. Drizzle with glaze and enjoy! YUMMY

Fresh figs will throw off the moisture content of your bread, leaving you with very dense bread. If you want to use both banana's and fresh figs weigh the normal amount of bananas you would use, then substitute some fresh figs for a 1/4 to 1/2 of the total weight of fruit. You should end up with a tasty loaf of very nutritious bread.

You may also want to look at the sugar content and adjust it accordingly.

Here is a recipe for an absolutely fabulous Fig Pizza!
I know, I know... it doesn't sound so great, but I guarantee... you will love it! I served it at a wedding shower luncheon and saw a few noses crinkle when it was served. When lunch was over not a crumb was left and requests for the recipe were many!
I use a prepared pizza dough crust.
In a frying pan brown 6 to 8 slices of good bacon until crispy. Crumble and set aside bacon and using the same pan, at lower heat, saute 1/2 of a chopped onion. When the onion is just getting transparent(about 3 minutes) add 6 chopped figs and 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint leaves. Saute for about 2 minutes, add crumbled bacon and gently stir. Spread the mixture over prepared pizza crust, drizzle with olive oil (just a little) and bake in the oven following the directions on the crust container. Usually about 10 to 15 minutes at 425 degrees.
Serve with a salad or sliced tomatoes. It's amazingly delicious!

I have a fig bread recipe if your are interested. I freeze the figs and make the bread during the years. I also use frozen figs in smoothies. Very yummy.

jaynegossett 08-03-2012 07:22 AM

I slice them and top them with a smoked gouda or blue cheese and serve as appetizers....yum!

allie1448 08-03-2012 10:11 AM

Poach them lightly in a sugar syrup and serve with home made vanilla icecream! Mmmmmmm heavenly!

Fresh figs are wonderful. Do you have enough to make some fig preserves? It's really easy to do, and so good. But fresh is even better. Enjoy them for breakfast or dessert or whenever you're hungry. Wish I had some.
