my sons garden has the best cabbage ready now, so sweet and young. I had heard somewhere that you could "wilt" cabbage for rolls in the micro...called the girl and she wasn't home. SO I wrapped the whole head after taking out the core in seran wrap and put it in the micro for 6 min. OH MY, the head just fell apart. Couldn't believe it, had those cabbage rolls all done without having to boil water etc to roll. They were so good....

1 can tomato soup + 1/2 can water 1 can chopped tomators with seasonings mix together mix 1 # hamburger, 1 egg and 1 package of rice mix (chicken, beef, mexican etc.) I use mexican. Add about 1 cup of the tomato mixture and mix thoroughly. I put the cabbage after taking it from the micro and put it in the sink and run cold water over it so I can handle it. I put a layer of tomato mixture and cut up cabbage I can't use to roll in the bottom of my slow cooker...put rolled cabbage on top and put the rest of the tomato on top. about 4 hours on high and no HOT kitchen  |
Thanks for the tip and the recipe! Bookmarked and gonna try it after buying a head of cabbage!

Aside from the Plastic Wrap in the microwave, this sounds delicious. As a nation we don't eat enough of good foods that don't come in packages.
I used to freeze stuff like this, and a Greek friend makes some mouth watering grape leaf stuffed rolls. I'll bet they would freeze nicely too. |
Oh my gosh! Those sound so good. Will be trying them soon as I go buy a head of cabbage. Thanks!
|
Thanks for the recipe!

Great Idea.... Thankyou for passing this along... I love cabbage rolls in the Fall and winter!
|
I love cabbage rolls but never make them because of the hassle of getting the cabbage ready. This micro tip takes care of that. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

thanks for letting us know

Will definitely try this. We love cabbage rolls! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks I'm waiting for decent sized heads to make and freeze 'Pigs in a Blanket' but at 97+temps wasn't looking forward to all that boiling water..The only things I use the micro-wave for is Corn on the cob and to reheat left-overs

Great idea for the cabbage. One suggestion though, since saran wrap can leach harmful chemicals onto your food while microwaving, is to put the cabbage into a bowl cover with a saucer or plate then microwave.

Thanks for the tip. I love cabbage rolls but don't like the nuisance of wilting the leaves in a pot of boiling water. This sounds so much easier.
|
Thank you. How about wet paper towel? So true about chemicals on any kind of plastics, I hear.
I love Cabbage rolls, thanks for the tips. Now I will be able to make them without the boiling part!!! :-D |
I made them using the micro for yrs, till a neighbor told me to freeze the head of cabbage.
Works great.I just put it in freezer the day before, remove from freezer the next morn & as it thaws,it gets limp.Just cut off the leaves you need & stuff. |

when I was 1st married-husband said he'd like some cabbage rolls,-asked around-was told it was "like your mom's spanish rice wrapped up in cabbage w/tomato sauce over it. so totally cooked S.rice wrapped it in raw cabbage, & simmered it, totally fell apart. ADDED TOOTHPICKS,still too loose. someone said add an EGG as a binder. cooked the rice mix, cooled it, added an EGG, still had no luck rolling.THEN I got a HUNGARIAN landlord, who invited me down so I could figure out what I was doing wrong.Imagine my surprise to learn the meat& rice were raw & the CABBAGE was cooked! --made adding that EGG alot easier! That was 40 years ago- alot easier to make now! Don't cook the rice anymore, either! LOL!!-needless to say I grew up hillybilly & we didn't make those!

sounds so good, i have not made cabbage rolls in years.
|
Thanks for the tip. We love cabbage rolls in the winter. I cook totally different for the summer months.
Also you can cook corn on the cob in the microwave too. I put all my ears in a zip lock bag and add several T of water, zip part way and cook about 7 min per bag. My daughter wraps hers in wax paper and cooks it about that long too, absolutely delicious. |
