Red face We cooked our 18 lb Turkey

in a roaster over this time and it came out GREAT! We usually have a larger Turkey, but the roaster only holds a 20 pounder.
Cooked on high for 1 hour, so it would brown, and then turn it down to medium to low for 3 hours.

This left room in the oven for the broccoli casserole, sweet potato souffle, scallop potatoes with cream cheese, and an extra pan of cornbread stuffing. Everything turned out great this year.
Altho, it always turns out great every year, this time there was no tention about (what to cook and when.)
The 5 lbs of scallop potatoes were the first to go, then the broccoli casserole.
We will be using the roaster oven from now on!

I was full, fat and sassy. Now I'm sleepy lol

We had dinner here. I'm worn out. Now I can drag all of my STUFF out again. My 3 sewing machines back on a table, our baskets that are full of stuff. scissors, chewing gum etc.,. We had turkey, dressing, dumplings, sweet potato casserole, Ham, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, apple salad, cranberry salad, rolls, chocolate, pumpkin, apple, buttermilk pie. Coffee and tea. Needless to say I didn't fix it all. Son is a good cook, grandaughter and me. We had a really good time and I'm glad it is over and cleaned up. My kids and grandkids bring tupperware bowls to take home goodies.LOL. I'm glad to get rid of all of it.

Yes, I always make my turkey like that. Brown it first (I wrap the wing tips with foil otherwise they burn to a crisp) in a 500 oven for about 30-45 minutes, then I unwrap the wing tips and cover the turkey and cook it for the remaining time. I do take it out twice to remove most of the juices (for gravy) and to baste it.

I guess I took the easy way out. DH wanted to go to Minot to Walmart to buy 2 batteries for his 1 ton flatbed that he uses to haul hay out to the cows in the pasture so we ate at the truckstop. He doesn't like turkey and they didn't have a ham special so he had hot hamburger with mash pot and country gravy and I had the turkey special Had all I wanted plus dessert. No mess no cleanup plus no fuss. Now I have a large ham I will put in the crock pot to slow cook tomorrow and make scalloped pot and ham. I can sew to my hearts content then all day.

My husband Deep fried out turkey this year and my daughter did a ham in the crockpot for the first time...both were delicious. Love the deep fried bird...so juicy, but not greasy.

We had 6 adults and 7 grandkids...6mo-6years...house fun of fun! 7PM - headed to bed to watch tv.

:-) We did our little 3 pound turkey roll and veggies in the oven and shared it with nothing. It was yummy.

Only downside was my pie did not jell and I blame it on Walmart Great Value jello. At home we froze it and it made a great dacquiri ice cream. So we created a new dessert for Thanksgiving.

Well this year was interesting at our house. We had a frozen turkey in our freezer that our daughter got from work. I was under the impression it was about 12 pounds. So two days before Thanksgiving we got it out and I was SHOCKED to see the size of this bird. It was at least 18 pounds, maybe 20, no tag on it so we could tell for sure. We thawed it in the fridge for a day and realized that was not going to cut it, thawed it in the sink with cold water for a day and then got out our old aluminum roaster that has roasted a whole flock of turkeys and it wouldn't fit...tried my small electric roaster, too small. Finally my husband got up in the attic area of our garage and got out the HUGE electric roaster and we ended up cooking the turkey all night at 200 degrees to finish thawing, turning up the heat at 5:00 a.m. and finally got him done by 11:00 and took the insert out and browned him in the oven for half an hour. What a TRIAL! I have been cooking turkeys for 60 years and this was the oddest situation EVER. Had a wonderful dinner with family anyway and we'll have some laughs to remember now that it's over and everything turned out all right!

Wondering if I can use the roaster and one of those turkey plastic cooking bags?
I always use the bag and the bird turns out great. Next Thanksgiving, I would like to free up my oven for side dishes.
Does anyone know?
Another great idea...going out for dinner and back to quilting! LOL!!!
