I like to use a sliver of soap. You know that's going to wash out when you wash the quilt. The soap can be sharpened on a sidewalk or driveway if you need to have a real narrow mark.

Along with rulers, not all quarter inch feet are the same. When I was a real beginner, I remember someone on TV say to always use the same machine for a project. I've always followed that advice.
