Hey Ell, when I use mine, I just adjust the stitch length to a little longer. I don't start in the middle like I would with free motion quilting. Hope that helps and good luck.

that's a tough one. I once used flannel for batting for a summer quilt and it was perfect, but that may not dry very quickly. I'm thinking no batting.

I think you use what is comfortable and gives you the best stitches. I bought a very fancy frame and used it only once. I found my stitches look better when the quilt is in my lap.
