Home Ec was pretty useless when I was in Jr. HS, but one thing I did learn was how to make a white sauce. It has been useful through the years. How to make tailor tacks, not so useful.

I used to use "all-fabric bleach" - not a chlorine bleach, I think it was sodium perborate. Hard to find in the stores now, it was a powder. If all else fails, you might consider tea-dying it.
