I freq use fleece as the backing of a quilt ( I quilt for older ppl that tend to be so cold all the time) I freq use double knit as batting... normally more in a quilt as you go type setting.......

I reuse dryer sheets ( in the laundry several times.. so they are pretty thin when I move them from the laundry to the sewing room , they hold up very well.. I too use phone books/ mag / or cheap...

not sure why your having mold issues... I've done the butter in a plastic cover ( shower cap looking saran covers) with no issues... I have had a butter bell in the past and love it... i think more...
