    After looking at the pattern, the 5 1/4 square is for a QST block. The square is further cut diagonally and sewn into 4 1/2 hourglass blocks.

    I would make 3 1/2 inch squares for the HST and trim down to appropriate size. Or use an easy angle ruler, which is my favorite way of making HSTs.
