I tried not to repeat any more than 5 squares of any fabric, so sometimes there is part of a plus sign on an edge and the remaining squares are on another edge.

I would use white or black. The white will keep it soft, the black will really make the purple pop. If, as you say, she is a tomboy, she may not like it "soft" and would appreciate the black more.
