The McCall's instructions said to cut individually and are not at all descriptive in what I'm supposed to do. Do I trim the corners to match up before I assemble to the next piece?

Yep and yep! Exactly what I was going to recommend. Also, when I sew I hold the bottom (not applique) firmer than the applique so that it "stretches" more. Does that make sense?
