Well... turns out the answer is a truckload of lint (those fluffy bunnies had been busily breeding in there!!) and big hunks of compressed lint through the bobbin area. Still a tiny bit of vibration...

I think you can't go past the gathered skirt with elasticised waist. 1 seam. Could even do cute shaped patch pockets for something extra if the skirt goes too quick or is too simple looking.

Thanks heaps... but it turns out it wasn't the timing. I'd accidentally knocked the plate that holds the bobbin case cover closed and it meant the needle was hitting the bobbin case...
