table runners

Do you put batting in a table runner? I never have, always just the back and front and that's it. I've been told I should put something in there, at least a thickness of cotton.

I was just about to top stitch some potholders I just made and I wondered if polyester thread will melt when using the potholder. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I used your idea to make a piano key border for a quilt for my sister. I sewed my piece onto fabric instead of paper and sewed the whole thing to the quilt. It used up scraps and she loved it.
