Suzanne, TR3 is made for protecting car paint so I doubt it will harm the paint on a sewing machine, but you are right to be cautious in using it on a very old machine.

TR3 is my favorite thing to use. You just have to follow the directions, and have a good supply of cotton balls handy. Caution though, it will remove a flaking clear coat so you have to be gentle...
