Update:

The new bobbin case arrived. Other than the "bite" taken out of the original one, they're identical ... both plastic, and they both have the fuzzy little rectangular pad and everything....

The bobbin case that came with the machine (bought new) is plastic. The replacement bobbin case I have on order is supposed to be an OEM part, so I'm assuming it'll be plastic too. Maybe the lighting...

Update: I got my mechanically-inclined DH to look at it when he got home from work a little bit ago. There's a little hook that comes out, grabs the threads, and somehow pulls them to the cutter...
