With no wall space for a design wall perhaps using a set of bifold doors draped with a flannel sheet or piece of felt might work. You can just fold it up to put away when needed. I am facing a wall...

I used a flannel backed tablecloth for a while...

I used a flannel backed tablecloth for a while and then I glued to it large pieces of felt I found in the remanent bins. I find that the felt works best at holding my fabrics for my 'design wall'.
