Bernina makes a great simple machine, the 215. Look into it. It sews a great straight stitch, buttonholes, and the feed dogs drop for free motion quilting. Plus, it holds its value if you sell it.

Check to see if you have a burr in the stitch...
Check to see if you have a burr in the stitch plate, this happens sometimes when you break a needle, you can use an emery board to file it off.
Or a burr in the hook area...
