The free pattern looks a lot like what I did, but I think the pattern I got is actually a little simpler. Same principle, though.

I didn't get how it would go together either, but it's pretty simple. No inset seams--you sew partial seams, then go back and finish the seams as you add vertical rows. Lots of prep work in sewing...

I spent all of the 4th of July quilting this one. I first saw a sample made from batiks in my LQS. On the package they show it made from batiks on black, and they also had one in thirties fabrics...
