Since the pegs are hammered in, you could just...
Since the pegs are hammered in, you could just space them however you need to to accommodate the different spools - if you sand the edges of the pegs, they would be a little easier to put in and out...

I persuaded DH to make a spool holder for my thread for my sewing desk drawer. We finished it earlier today. Pictures are the before, the during and the after!
