Another thought, buy the big pack of wash cloths...
Another thought, buy the big pack of wash cloths from Walmart and use those as backing. If you have yardage or an old towel to use, lay the top fabric already cut to size on top of the terry cloth...

The laminated fabric is very soft and flexible. That is what I used to make the bibs with the diaper backing. It feels and drapes like fabric not like vinyl or plastic at all. I lined the baby...

I just finished making bibs for my DGS. I bought a pack of cloth diapers to use as burp cloths and he doesn't need those anymore so now they are backings for the bibs. Much easier to sew then...
