Having the borders already on might prove to be helpful! More to hold onto.
But then, I'm not an applique expert.

I haven't read all the responses, but I agree with Klue. Or, if you were someone who liked to do applique, a twining vine (utilizing some of the jewel tones) through the wide black border might looke...
