One question I have - how critical is it to tell the two wires coming directly out of the motor apart? I don't really understand polarity so I can't just TELL and I'm afraid of doing things...

I have one of these I need to do the same on. At some point in its history, someone simply snipped off the line that went to the lamp and just put a bit of electrical tape over the exposed cord...
