There aren't any rules. You could use crazy quilt shapes if you didn't like the piano key setup. I have a ton of odd shapes too and I think a crazy quilt style border would be charming on a scrap...

If you can't find the 3" paper rolls I think you could use lightweight interfacting cut to that width and just leave it on. No ripping off of paper!
