Just make 2-3 different 9 patches and cut them up and play with the arrangements you come up with. I made quilts for my twin GD with the D9P, and then put then together and appliqued bugs and animals on the larger squares. They turned out very cute, if I do say so myself. For a quicker way of seeing what would happen, just color a couple of 9 patch blocks on paper, cut them and see what you can come up with. It can be a planned quilt of 3 colors, or a very scrappy one with a lot of color. Try it and play with the blocks after they are cut. Just 1/4 turn using the original 9 patch cut makes it look completely different.
