In 2004 I downloaded "One Hundred and One Patchwork Patterns" which was a new and revised edition of Ruby Short McKims (1891-1976) book on patchwork quilting. Her first published quilt pattern (Quaddie Quilties)was published in the Kansas City Star in 1916.

I don't know if you can still download it from antiquarian ebooks but it might be possible. The Kansas City Star as well as numerous other newspapers back then would publish these patterns regularly. This is how many quilters got their patterns. You can do a search to find all the old newspaper patterns which generally gave your the pattern pieces to cut and the general amount of fabric you would need without the type of instructions you are given today. You were just expected to know how to make the pattern by the limited instructions given.

If you are into antique/vintage quilt patterns this might be a place for you to start.
