J.M. if you will leave the pp on the fabric, the quarter inch margin line will guide you to sew the perfect 1/4". Then you can tear the paper off. It is messy but something I do while watching TV (get out your tweezers).
Another advantage the pp helps with is, when I am piecing, my fabric doesn't get chewed up in the throat plate slot. I don't have one for my machine that just has a hole. Apparently it isn't made for my machine.
Hopefully you will begin to love the pp. I try to convert every pattern I do to pp as I can't sew a straight seam.
