I have finally finished my #9 block. I have had a really hard time deciding on what thread to use for the embroidery and after testing about a dozen different things on my background fabric, I decided to just go with plain old embroidery floss. It is a really dark red and might not show up great in the pictures, but it really is pretty on the dark blue and has the look I was aiming for.
