Hmmm. I think the idea of patching the square that was cut and then either placing the label there or some cute applique :) is a great one!
Now for the table runner that a certain unnamed youngster cut "quite by accident", :) I think your idea is great, or if you can think of someway to ummmmm hide all the cuttings :) then go for that! Such cute things happen here on the board!
