But tastes are different and are supposed to be different. Someone has no obligation to like something just because it has been given to him or her. It might be hurtful to receive such a response but at least it's honest. I value honesty.
That was my first thought also. Although he probably could have been more tactful and at least expressed appreciation for the thought and work, we each have our own tastes and if he doesn't like it he doesn't.
