You can do this! Yes, undo the needle. It may drop a little, but there is no where for it to go and then just pull it out. Take the two screws that hold the needle plate cover off and you should be able to see if there is thread there. Easiest way to see if that is the problem. Just pull on the thread and at the same time rotate the hand wheel an inch or two back and forth while you pull on the thread. If you need more info, just add a post.
