Why would you hate to do that? I think finding a local outlet for donations is a great choice. I, for one, prefer to see my donations get used locally. There are LOTS of great places to donate quilts; your local hospital, animal shelter, homeless shelter, veteran's center, women's shelter... I've even donated a quilt to the PTA, who auctioned it off and purchased books for the school library. Most of these organizations don't have special requirements, either, except for the hospital. They just request that the quilt be narrow enough to allow for easy access to the side rails of the bed.
