Grant, I've heard the same thing about welding cast iron. It's a frequent topic of discussion when dealing with broken hand planes
The consensus is that it's beyond the skill of most welders and it's as likely to permanently screw things up as it is to help. Some have had luck brazing it but even that isn't certain to work.
