The criteria on the judging sheet says: corners mitered at 45 degree angle or squared off (miter should be closed and may be hand stitched).

I was thinking that means the corners should be stitched closed, but maybe it just means there should be no gap and you could stitch them, if you want. I don't know. One of my hand written comments is: "miters need some work in execution, close miters front and back."

Probably every corner on that quilt looks different. I usually stitch a corner, wonder what went wrong with it, flip through my basic quilting book, shrug, and then stitch on to the next corner and try it a little differently. Maybe by the 3rd or 4th corner, I am getting it right. Then, by the time I am ready to bind another quilt, days, weeks or months later, I have forgotten what I learned!
